According to the National Center for PTSD trauma exposure is quite common for many women, and that women are more likely to develop chronic PTSD than men. While women are less likely to be exposed to circumstances of combat, women are more likely to experience military sexual trauma (i.e., sexual harassment and sexual assault) compared with men. Women's experiences of stress and trauma have been linked to a variety of negative mental health outcomes, including depression, substance abuse, and most commonly, post-traumatic stress disorder.

A Department of Veterans Affairs facility that brings services directly to homeless Veterans in the neighborhoods they walk opened in Denver on Feb. 10. The Community Resource and Referral Center, one of 12 planned by VA and the first to open its doors, was dedicated in a neighborhood close to shelters and churches where homeless Veterans spend their days and nights.

VA Adding Family Therapists and Mental Health Counselors to Workforce
Secretary of Veterans Affairs Eric K. Shinseki today announced that the department would add approximately 1,600 mental health clinicians – to include nurses, psychiatrists, psychologists, and social workers as well as nearly 300 support staff to its existing workforce of 20,590 mental health staff as part of an ongoing review of mental health operations.

VA has decided to try a new path when it comes to caring for and healing the nation’s wounded Veterans. Now, in addition to repairing their damaged bodies and minds, the Department is attempting to go one step further and repair their crumbling marriages. Or at least try to.

Special Journal Showcases VA Women’s Health Research
A special supplement of the journal Women’s Health Issues published July 13 shows the tremendous growth and diversity of VA women’s health research in recent years. Its publication comes as VA recognizes July as Women Veterans Month, which included a National Training Summit on Women Veterans held July 15-17 in Washington, D.C. “VA has had a longstanding commitment to improving women’s health,” said VA Secretary Eric K. Shinseki, “This supplement shows the tremendous progress we’ve made by making that commitment to women Veterans a top priority across the Department.”

Shinseki announced the launch of free, drop-in childcare service centers at three VA medical centers to an audience of more than 700 participants attending the Fifth National Summit on Women Veterans’ Issues July 15-17 at the Hyatt Regency Washington on Capitol Hill. “We know that many Veterans, particularly women Veterans, are the primary care takers of young children,”

Major Outreach Effort Launched. The Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) has embarked on a major initiative to reach out to women Veterans in order to solicit their input on ways to enhance the health care services VA provides to women Veterans.

Meeting the Needs of Moms-to-Be
“Only a few of our larger medical centers are equipped to provide obstetrical care on-site,” Hayes explained. “So for the most part, VA relies on private health care providers to perform this service. We pay for the care, we monitor the care, but we don’t actually provide the care.” Hayes said it’s also VA’s policy to stay in contact with the woman during her pregnancy, with the goal of having her return to VA primary care within six to eight weeks.
